California does not tell successful applicants their essay scores, performance test score, or MBE score. Successful applicants do not receive copies of their answers following the exam. Only unsuccessful applicants receive their scores on each essay and performance test.
Results are posted on the Applicant Portal. At p.m. on the day results are posted, applicants can also access the pass list on the State Bar website. Applicants who have failed the exam receive the grades assigned to their written answers as well as their MBE scaled score.

The State Bar of California's Committee of Bar Examiners on Friday voted 8-3 to allow bar takers to sit for the exam remotely or in test centers located in other states or countries—provided they take it at the same time as those in California to reduce the risk of cheating.
The written portion (essays and PT) and MBE portion of the examination are weighted equally, 50 percent each. To break it down further, five essays are worth 40% of your overall exam score, and PT is 10% of your overall bar exam score (one PT counts for two essays).
The states with the lowest pass rates from the July, 2018 bar exam administrations are, in this order: California (44%) Arizona (50%) Alabama (52%) Mississippi (52%) North Carolina (52%) Alaska (53%) North Dakota (54%) Maryland (55%)
California is widely considered to have the hardest bar exam, due to its low pass rate and the difficulty of the content and constraints of the exam.
