With 95,437 active members, the State Bar of Texas is one of the largest state bars in the United States. Unlike the American Bar Association (ABA), the State Bar of Texas (SBOT) is a mandatory bar.

Rule XIII of the Rules Governing Admission to the Bar of Texas governs admission to the Texas Bar for attorneys licensed in other jurisdictions. The process is called Texas Admission Without Examination.

Bar reciprocity in the United States is a concept that allows attorneys to practice law in a state other than the one in which they're licensed. If someone has passed the California bar exam is it necessary to take the Texas bar exam to practice in the state of Texas? Please fill out the registration form below. Applicants must be engaged in the active practice of law in at least one reciprocal state for at least five (5) out of the past seven (7) years. Experienced Attorney Applicants shall be admitted as provided in Rule 220. The application process could take from 60 to 90 days to complete.
