"Good cause" for withdrawal generally includes the breakdown of the attorney-client relationship. You do not need to have a motion to fire your attorney. If you believe the attorney violated the ethics rules, you may file a complaint, but you will need to be able to delineate what it is you think he did wrong. I don't believe there are statutes of limitation against filing a Bar Complaint. Virginia Legal Ethics Op. 1332 (1990) still remains the principal guidance on the ethical considerations when a lawyer leaves a law firm.
