In most states, breaks are required by law. The employer has to, by law, enforce that employees take those breaks. If they fail to do so, it opens them up to very expensive lawsuits. I recall a decade or two back, The Gap has a massive settlement in the state of California over employees working through breaks.

Arizona is one of the few states in the United States that does not have any laws regarding breaks at work. However, this does not mean that meal and rest breaks are not important for creating a healthy work environment.

All California working stiffs get a thirty (30) minutes lunch period before the end of the fifth hour in an eight (8) hour workday. No more, no less. And rules are a bit different for federal employees, however, we stick by our 30-minute lunch.

There is no federal law or Arizona state law that says employers must provide breaks and lunches. Although breaks are not required, employers must pay employees for time they spend working and for shorter breaks during the day.An employer shall allow each employee to take at least one thirty minute meal break during every continuous eight hours of labor performed. Workers have a right to at least a 30minute meal break or each 6 hours worked in a calendar day. Many employers provide breaks despite this, but they aren't required to. Federal law does not require breaks; however, the DOL states that breaks under 20 minutes must be paid. However, the State of Arizona has no law regulating meal or rest breaks. Arizona does not require employers to provide rest periods or meal breaks. Arizona is one of the few states in the United States that does not have any laws regarding breaks at work. There is no requirement in Arizona law that an employee be given break time or lunch periods.
