Federal Law: Furthermore, a child 14 or 15 years of age may work only between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the school year. Minors 16-17-18 years old who are enrolled in public or private school, may NOT work after 10pm or before 5am on an night preceding a school day.16 and 17 year-olds may not work more than 48 hours a week. 16 - Basic minimum age for employment. Under the FLSA, 16 and 17yearolds may be employed for unlimited hours in any nonagricultural, nonhazardous position. Work permits are required for all minors under the age of 18 to work in the State of Maryland. All minors between the ages of 1417 must provide "working papers" prior to their first day of work. Age 1417: If you are between the ages of 14 and 17 years, you must have a work permit to work any job. There are exceptions. Under 16 Years Old Youth under 16 years old must not work more than 40 hours per week.
