A minor aged 14 or 15 years old can work up to 40 hours a week during Spring, Winter, and Summer Break. They are restricted to work a maximum of 3 hours a day when school is in session, 8 hours a day when school is not in session with a maximum of 18 hours a week from AM to PM.

Hour Restrictions Minors age 16 or 17 may not work more than 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. They may work as early as a.m. or as late as a.m. on days that are not followed by school days. The California Education Code limits the number of hours a minor may work while school is in session.

Presently, no OSHA standard to regulate extended and unusual shifts in the workplace exists. A work period of eight consecutive hours over five days with at least eight hours of rest in between shifts defines a standard shift. Any shift that goes beyond this standard is considered to be extended or unusual.
