You must be able to prove that serving on a jury would cause you undue hardship to be exempted or dismissed from service. All King County residents who meet qualifications and cannot be excused for an undue hardship must serve as a juror when summoned. In Washington state, we all have the right for a trial by jury.
You might be excused altogether, or your date may be deferred (rescheduled). These accepted excuses will depend on the court that called you for jury duty. You must ask to be excused. This generally involves filling out an affidavit or calling the court.
Don't talk about the case, or issues raised by the case with anyone, including other jurors, while the trial is going on, and don't let others talk about the case in your presence, even family members. If someone insists on talking to you or another juror about the case, please report the matter to a court employee.
Court Dress Code Your clothing should be clean, neat, well-fitted, and appropriate in court. You may not wear camouflage outfits, warm-up, or jogging suits. You may not wear tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, or tops that show cleavage or reveal the abdomen. Shirts and blouses must be tucked in.
Certain people are eligible to be exempted or excused from jury duty, such as people age 70 or older or full-time students. If you qualify, you must contact the court to receive an exemption before your appearance date. Follow the instructions on the summons or contact the court directly for more information.
