The 14 th Amendment to the US Constitution provides that, with few discrete exceptions, people born in the United States are citizens of this country. The citizenship clause overturned the Dred Scott decision and ensured that everyone born or naturalized in the United States was a citizen.Every act shall embrace but one subject and matters properly connected therewith, which subject shall be expressed in the title; but if any subject shall be. Among them was the Fourteenth Amendment, which prohibits the states from depriving "any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. The 14th Amendment provides, in part, that no state can "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. In other words, the Fourteenth Amendment only applied to privileges and immunities of national citizenship as found in the Constitution. The Due Process Clause. The Citizenship Clause granted citizenship to All persons born or naturalized in the United States. The Equal Protection Clause requires each state to provide equal protection under the law to all people, including non-citizens, within its jurisdiction.
