FAQ

Jury instructions are instructions for jury deliberation that are written by the judge and given to the jury. At trial, jury deliberation occurs after evidence is presented and closing arguments are made.

The judge will advise the jury that it is the sole judge of the facts and of the credibility (believability) of witnesses. He or she will note that the jurors are to base their conclusions on the evidence as presented in the trial, and that the opening and closing arguments of the lawyers are not evidence.

Either before or after the closing arguments by the lawyers, the judge will explain the law that applies to the case to you. This is the judge's instruction to the jury. You have to apply that law to the facts, as you have heard them, in arriving at your verdict.

What are some of the best excuses people have used when they didn't want to show up for jury duty? You are not fluent in English. You are disabled, evidenced by a physician's attestation. You are hospitalized, again evidenced by a physician's attestation.

If you are a full-time out of state student, a juror who is 72 years or older, or an individual who has a disability that could interfere with your ability to serve as a juror and wish to be excused, deferred, or exempted, please submit a signed statement of the ground of the request pursuant to G.S.

The medical reasons can vary - you could have a severe acute condition that would prevent you from leaving the house (like a severe case of the flu, or broken bones, or anything that might prevent you from leaving), or you could have a chronic condition that affects your mobility or your stamina.
