The arrest and detention of an Indian consular official in New York on visa fraud charges has created a diplomatic uproar. An Indian diplomat said US authorities subjected her to a strip search, cavity search and DNA swabbing following her arrest on visa charges in New York City.Indian officials expressed outrage that Khobragade was stripsearched. Arshack said that the way Khobragade was handcuffed, stripsearched and locked up in a cell with hardened prisoners was nothing short of barbaric. The fight began with the December arrest of Devyani Khobragade, India's Deputy Consul in New York. Devyani Khobragade, India's deputy consul general in New York, is accused of submitting false documents to obtain a work visa for her Manhattan housekeeper.
