Purpose of This Handbook. The purpose of this handbook is to acquaint trial jurors with the general nature and importance of their role as jurors. If you have received a jury summons you must pre-register below. However, a jury decides factual issues and renders a verdict as a jury would in a traditional trial and the parties waive all appeals. The questionnaires are used to determine if you are qualified to serve as a juror. There are also rare circumstances where a grand jury recommends that a case should be sent to Family Court or where the grand jury makes a report to the court. The lawyers are given "a fair opportunity to question the prospective jurors as to any unexplored matter affecting their qualifications. Jurors are selected to listen to the facts of the case and to determine if the defendant committed the crime. A jury is made up of 12 people who are chosen at random to hear the evidence and decide if the accused is guilty or not guilty. Judges should make use of the Zoom break-out room function should any discussion need to be conducted outside the presence of the jury.
