I am requesting a jury duty excusal because of my personal obligation to provide necessary and actual care to my two children. My elder child, Amy, is 3 years old and my younger child, Andrew, is 1 year old. They require constant care and attention and I do not have anyone with whom I can leave them full time.

There is no age exemption for jury service. If you are 70 years of age or older, the California Rules of Court allow you to be excused due to a medical condition without a doctor's note.

For example, write something like “My name is Jane Doe. On (date), I received a jury summons for (court date) at (court address) and was assigned the juror number (insert number here). I am writing to request to be excused from jury service because being absent from work would pose an extreme financial hardship.”

You can't ``cancel'' jury duty. You can possibly be excused from it or postpone it. Either way, you need to respond to the summons and determine if you are entitled to be excused (perhaps as a non citizen, felon, non English speaker etc.) or ask that it be moved to another date.

Have not been adjudged incompetent by a court. Must be able to read, write and comprehend the English language. Cannot have been convicted of a felony within the last 10 years. Cannot have served on a jury panel within the county within the past year.

The process for requesting a permanent medical excuse from jury service is as follows: (1) An applicant must submit to the jury commissioner a written request for permanent medical excuse with a supporting letter, memo, or note from a treating health care provider.

If disabled, individuals can request a permanent medical excuse. A doctor's note might be required. They provide care for a dependent and cannot afford to have someone cover for them. Serving would be an extreme financial burden.
