Please email all requests to be excused to ejuror@paedcourts , or in writing, within 5 days of receipt of the summons, or as early as possible. Requests to be excused will not be accepted by telephone. Requests to be excused for work-related reasons must be from the juror, not an employer.

And, unlike voting, it is mandatory, not discretionary. The Courts recognize that jury duty imposes a heavy burden on many citizens. Those who fulfill their civic duty will find that they are appreciated by the court system and often report that serving was a positive and educational experience.

Any person who fails to appear pursuant to such order or who fails to show good cause for noncompliance with the summons may be fined up to $1,000.00, imprisoned not more than three days, ordered to perform community service, or any combination thereof.

In Pennsylvania, no one is excused or exempt from jury duty except those who: Are in active service of the Armed Forces; Have served on jury duty within three years of their current summons. Demonstrate to the court undue hardship or extreme inconvenience.

Don't talk about the case, or issues raised by the case with anyone, including other jurors, while the trial is going on, and don't let others talk about the case in your presence, even family members. If someone insists on talking to you or another juror about the case, please report the matter to a court employee.

Sole parents, main breadwinners, leader on a big project at work, physical or mental disabilities that may impede your attendance... these things will almost always get you out of Jury Duty, though you should try to bring documentation of some kind to prove it.

Citizens may be summoned to jury service once every twelve (12) months provided your prior jury service did not exceed three (3) days.
