2.1. 2 The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) The IACtHR was created in 1969 as a supervisory organ of the American Convention of Human Rights (American Convention). The court started operating in 1979, after the convention entered into force.

The applicant must be, personally and directly, a victim of a violation of the Convention, and must have suffered a significant disadvantage.

The Court is based in Strasbourg, in the Human Rights Building designed by the British architect Lord Richard Rogers in 1994 – a building whose image is known worldwide.

The ECtHR was set up in 1959, it is based in Strasbourg. 2. It hears applications alleging that a contracting state has breached one or more of the human rights provisions concerning civil and political rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and its protocols.

The European Court of Human Rights is an international court based in Strasbourg, France. It consists of a number of judges equal to the number of member States of the Council of Europe that have ratified the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms – currently 461.

Set up in 1959, the Court ensures that Member States of the Council of Europe respect the rights and guarantees set out in the European Convention on Human Rights. The Court is made up of 47 elected judges, one from each Member State. It examines complaints (known as 'applications') alleging violations of human rights.

The Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR) is a state agency whose mission is to protect the civil rights of all Minnesotans through enforcing the Minnesota Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination. Its Commissioner, Rebecca Lucero, is appointed by the governor.

The Human Rights Act gives you legal protection of your human rights, such as your right to life, or your right to a fair trial. There are 16 rights in total, and each one is referred to as a separate article, for example, Article 2: Right to life. You are protected under the Human Rights Act if you live in the UK.

Since 1967, the Minnesota Human Rights Act has protected the civil rights of Minnesotans. The law prohibits discrimination in different areas such as employment, housing, and education on the basis of protected class such as race, religion, and disability.
