Film production incentives are tax incentives offered on a state-by-state basis throughout the United States to encourage in-state film production. Since the 1990s, states have offered increasingly competitive incentives to lure productions away from other states.

A brief introduction to the Irish film tax incentive Section 481 allows productions to benefit from a financial injection of up to 32% of whichever of the following is the lowest: Irish eligible expenditure. 80% of total film production costs.

The state offers a tax credit rebate to production companies for between 25% and 40% of their expenses for projects based in Louisiana. The program is capped at $150 million per year.

A production is required to spend a minimum of $500,000 in Georgia qualified expenditures to qualify for the film tax credit. Costs for pre-production, production, and post-production related to filming in Georgia are qualified expenditures.

The qualifying expenditure figure is multiplied by the credit rate of 53% to give the amount of the “above the line” credit before tax. The maximum credit a film can receive is £6.36 million, which is based on the maximum amount a film would be entitled to if it had total core expenditure of £15 million.

Louisiana was the first state to adopt a film tax incentive, in 1992, and considerably expanded it a decade later, ultimately earning the moniker “Hollywood South.” The program was capped in 2015, amid a state budget crisis. Georgia, which has no cap, has since surpassed the state as a major production hub.
