You can voluntarily cancel your vehicle's registration online using DRIVES e-Services or in-person at your local County Tag Office. To use DRIVES e-Services, you will need: Your license plate number or VIN number.
To change your MOT date you have to book in early, within the allowed time frames. You can't extend your MOT date, only move it forward. You don't want to drive around without a valid MOT after all. You can book your MOT up to one month before your vehicle's existing certificate runs out minus one day.
Contrary to popular belief, there's no grace period for renewing lapsed MOT certificates. Driving with an expired MOT certificate is illegal and can result in fines and legal penalties. The only exception is if you are on your way to a pre-booked MOT retest or garage repair appointment.
You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. If your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date for next year is 16 April.
