You are absolutely within your rights to not identify yourself in Michigan, which does not (to my knowledge) have a Stop and ID law. But. You committed a violation- a peace disturbance. The officer gave you a warning instead of a ticket or arrest, which he almost for sure could have done.

Michigan has no “stop and identify” law and does not require any citizen (or non-citizen for that matter) to routinely carry any sort of documentation when going about in public. You can't really be required to produce something you're not required to have.
