Some states restrict the type of document copies that Notaries may certify. For example, in Alaska, New York and Tennessee, Notaries may only certify tangible copies of electronic records, so certifying a copy of a passport (which is a physical document) is not authorized.
A renewal reminder is mailed approximately 90 days prior to the license expiration date. You must renew within 6 months of the expiration date. You may renew your commission online by applying for reappointment through our online licensing system.
Can I renew my New York notary commission after it expires? Yes. But you must renew within six months of the expiration date. If it is expired for more than six months, you must apply as a new notary.
