Mesa (/ˈmeɪsə/ MAY-sə) is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 504,258 at the 2020 census.
Early town boosters came up with "Gem City," an appellation used for many decades. We don't know for sure when "Gateway" was first used to position Mesa as the entry point to the Valley, but the term often appears in publications and in the names of businesses.
