Disaffiliating pastors and members commonly cite the half-dozen biblical verses that pertain to homosexuality as their reason for leaving. But we in the UMC have for decades routinely ignored biblical teachings about the role of women, adultery, and slavery, among other topics.
The Global Methodist Church (GM Church, or GMC) is a Methodist denomination within Protestant Christianity subscribing to views that were propounded by the conservative Confessing Movement. The denomination is headquartered in the United States and has a presence internationally.
From the earliest disaffiliations, churches in the Southeastern Jurisdiction showed the most interest in disaffiliating. In 2019, 35 percent of United Methodist churches in the United States were in the Southeastern Jurisdiction.

The major difference lies in the fact that the Social Principles are not binding Page 3 on clergy or the local churches in the UMC. But in the GMC, clergy and local churches must agree to support and teach the Social Witness. Ordained elders are guaranteed an appointment in the UMC but not in the GMC.
United Methodist leaders gave congregations until December 31 to decide to leave. Factions within the denominations split over disagreements in theology, namely, how the church considers LGBTQ+ ministers and congregants.
Associate Justice Tommy Bryan wrote in his opinion, “By enacting ¶ 2553, the UMC allowed churches the opportunity to leave the UMC and retain their property if they were to leave “for reasons of conscience”; the churches had a certain period to make their decision.
Churches that wish to disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church should submit a letter requesting disaffiliation signed by 2-3 church officers to their District Superintendent (i.e., trustees, church council chair, finance, S/PPRC, etc.)
A simple majority of Annual Conference members present, and voting is required to affirm disaffiliation. If the Annual Conference does not affirm the disaffiliation, the churches remain United Methodist.
