A simple majority of Annual Conference members present, and voting is required to affirm disaffiliation. If the Annual Conference does not affirm the disaffiliation, the churches remain United Methodist. There is no other mechanism to disaffiliate under our Book of Discipline.

As far as the UMC hierarchy is concerned, disaffiliation is over. If you are UMC, you've been told to take it or leave it. In a few USA Annual Conferences, Bishops have announced that they will propose an exit path for churches in their area at the upcoming Annual Conference Session.

Churches that wish to disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church should submit a letter requesting disaffiliation signed by 2-3 church officers to their District Superintendent (i.e., trustees, church council chair, finance, S/PPRC, etc.)

Disaffiliating pastors and members commonly cite the half-dozen biblical verses that pertain to homosexuality as their reason for leaving. But we in the UMC have for decades routinely ignored biblical teachings about the role of women, adultery, and slavery, among other topics.

You can do is to end your membership in The UMC. The ONLY way to be ENTIRELY removed from The UMC is transfer.This is grounded in our theology of baptism and membership. The Book of Discipline provides that members can be removed from the membership role if they "transfer, die or have withdrawn from membership." If the member does not comply with any of the available alternatives over a period of two years, the member's name may be removed. In June, 298 Western Pennsylvania churches made their split official at the annual conference in Erie. Hundreds of local churches are in the disaffiliation process and will complete their withdrawal from the UM Church in the coming months. If a pastor is informed that a member has without notice united with a church of another denomination, the pastor shall make diligent inquiry.
