Like other denominations, after years of national and other meetings (“conferences,” in Methodism), the denomination has at long last come to a conclusive point. As a result, some 20 to 25 percent of churches and members have departed the denomination.

In Texas, 711 churches—nearly 40 percent of the state's 1,784 United Methodist congregations—have voted to leave the denomination. In many disaffiliating churches, whose ranks include both tiny, rural congregations and suburban megachurches, the decision was nearly unanimous.

Twenty-Five Percent of Churches Disaffiliated On the other hand, the 1844 division of Methodism over slavery, the break that served as a model for many proposing this denominational split, resulted in a 40 percent membership loss to the Methodist Episcopal Church when the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was formed.

Churches that wish to disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church should submit a letter requesting disaffiliation signed by 2-3 church officers to their District Superintendent (i.e., trustees, church council chair, finance, S/PPRC, etc.)

Associate Justice Tommy Bryan wrote in his opinion, “By enacting ¶ 2553, the UMC allowed churches the opportunity to leave the UMC and retain their property if they were to leave “for reasons of conscience”; the churches had a certain period to make their decision.

Disaffiliations in the church's southern jurisdictions accounted for 71% of all disaffiliations. The report found that the geographic landscape of disaffiliation paralleled the last split of a similar scale when the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, formed in 1844 due to a division over slavery.

The lay member does this by formally requesting that the pastor of the church to which he or she is transferring ask for the proper letter or certificate of transfer from the former church. When the letter or certificate is sent, the lay person ceases to be a member of the former local church.

To the pastors and administrators at ____________ church. This letter is notice that I am not longer a member attendee at _______________ church, effective with the date of this letter. You must mail the letter on the date on the letter and they will not receive it for a couple of days thereafter.

A withdrawal is a unilateral and unfounded breaking with the church of which one is a member. One simply resigns, either by telling the ward elders or by writing a letter to the consistory. A church may for a while make no announcement regarding the withdrawal, but in time an announcement will be made.
