The school must respond in writing within 15 school days of receiving your evaluation request. The school may want to meet with you before deciding whether or not an evaluation is necessary—this is sometimes called a Review of Existing Data (RED) meeting.

There are ten major steps for a student to get an IEP: Child is identified as possibly needing special education and related services. Child is evaluated. Eligibility is decided. Child is declared eligible for services. IEP meeting is scheduled. IEP meeting is held and the IEP is written.

In my school, qualifying for an IEP is not an easy process. There needs to evidence, meetings, testing and a universal consensus among the people involved. I can say that just about every kid at my school who is on an IEP, needs it too succeed.

“I hardly know your child” or “I have only had your child for a couple of weeks and am still getting to know him.” As soon as this statement is made it conveys the impression that you should not be part of the IEP team because you do not know the child sufficiently to develop the IEP to meet the child's needs.
