The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners is the governing body of unincorporated Miami-Dade County and has broad, regional powers to establish policies for Miami-Dade County services. The government provides major metropolitan services countywide and city-type services for residents of unincorporated areas.

City Commission Duties Adopting local laws and ordinances. Appointing the City Manager, City Attorney and City Clerk. Establishing policies, utility rates, assessments and other fees. Managing growth and land use.

Commissioners are responsible for overseeing the county's management and administration, representing county interests at the state and federal level, participating in long-range planning, and managing the county budget and finances.

Duties of the Board of County Commissioners Authorize bonds for capital improvements. Manage County properties through the County Administrator. Appoint special boards and committees. Establish policy which, through the County Administrator, filters down to department heads and others who carry it out.

The areas of the County that do not fall within municipal boundaries comprise the unincorporated area of Miami-Dade. With a population exceeding one million people, the unincorporated area, if declared a city, would form the largest city in Florida and one of the largest in the nation.
