There is a general district court in each city and county in Virginia. The general district court hears traffic violation cases, minor criminal cases known as misdemeanors, and civil cases such landlord and tenant disputes, contract disputes, and personal injury actions.

The General District Court hears cases in which a person is charged with a traffic offense. Most traffic offenses are traffic infractions, which are generally punishable by a fine.

Appeals must be filed in writing within ten calendar days from the date of conviction. An appeal may be filed by a defendant or by the defendant's attorney by appearing at the Clerk's Office to complete the appropriate forms.

Avoid making excuses, but provide context. Express remorse for the violation and acknowledge that you made a mistake. Taking responsibility shows maturity and a willingness to learn from the experience. Request that the ticket be dismissed or reduced to a lesser offense, such as a non-moving violation.
