The immigration legal system in the United States is an overlapping network involving many different government agencies, laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines. It would be nearly impossible to navigate this system competently without the knowledge and expertise of an immigration attorney.

The AAO strives to complete its appellate review within 180 days from the time it receives a complete case record. Some cases may take longer than 180 days due to factors beyond the AAO's control.

Although you can represent yourself in Immigration Court, it can be very difficult to win a case on your own because the immigration laws are very complex. It is important to be represented by a trusted attorney for the best chance for success.

To facilitate access to court records, EOIR provides service--outside of the FOIA process--for respondents and their representatives of record to request a copy of their official record of proceeding (ROP). Requests for a copy of an ROP may be made to the immigration courts or the BIA in person, by mail, or by email.

Status of Hearings For information about your case, please check the Automated Case Information System online or at 800-898-7180 (TDD: 800-828-1120) or call the immigration court handling your case. EOIR continues to support internet-based hearings and has established practices to guide immigration judges and parties.

Address the letter to the "Honorable Immigration Judge." Introduce yourself, mentioning your relationship with the person who seeks a bond and how long you have known him or her. Describe the person's traits, common interests, noteworthy accomplishments, and other reasons they are not a threat to others.

You must take the first step within 30 days of the immigration judge's decision. The first step to appeal your case is to fill out and submit a Notice of Appeal (Form EOIR-26). The BIA must receive your Notice of Appeal within 30 days of the judge's decision. You do not need an attorney to fill out this form.

Requests for copies of the official record of proceedings may be made to the immigration courts in person, by mail, or via email. See email model above in the ICPM, Chapter 12.2(a)(1)(A). See Chapter 1.5(c) (Records).

For a friend or relative, your letter should showcase their character, achievements, and contributions in a personal and supportive way. Describe your relationship with them, provide specific examples of their strengths and accomplishments, and explain why they are deserving of the immigration benefit they are seeking.
