Contra Costa County is a county located in the northern portion of the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The county seat is Martinez, but the largest city is Concord.

Created February 18, 1850. The name signifies “opposite coast,” because of its situation opposite San Francisco, in an easterly direction, on San Francisco Bay. In 1853, Alameda County was formed from territory originally included in this county.

Major industries in the county today include petroleum refining, healthcare, education, telecommunications, financial and retail services, steel manufacturing, prefabricated metals, chemicals, electronic equipment, paper products and food processing.

Contra Costa means “opposite coast” in Spanish. The county was given this name because it sits on the opposite coast of San Francisco, the most populous city at the time. Contra Costa County was one of the original 27 counties in California created in 1850 at the time of statehood.

District 5 Supervisor Federal Glover serves as Chair of the Board of Supervisors for 2024. District 2 Supervisor Candace Andersen serves as Vice Chair. All meetings are open to the public, and the public is encouraged to attend via television and live-streaming.
