The tangible personal property tax was replaced with the Commercial Activity Tax (CAT). The CAT is an annual tax imposed on the privilege of doing business in Ohio, measured by gross receipts from business activities in Ohio.

Business personal property (BPP) insurance covers the equipment, furniture, fixtures and inventory that you own, use or rent inside your workspace. Basically, it covers almost everything except the building itself.

The twelve states that do not tax business personal property are: North Dakota. South Dakota. Ohio.

(A) "Personal property" includes every tangible thing that is the subject of ownership, whether animate or inanimate, including a business fixture, and that does not constitute real property as defined in section 5701.02 of the Revised Code.

Personal property generally includes furniture, fixtures, office and industrial equipment, machinery, tools, supplies, inventory and any other property not classified as real property.

Building and personal property coverage form excludes claims for loss or damage to land, water, bridges, roadways, and underground pipes or drains. The policy also excludes any loss to plants, crops, trees and shrubs.

Twelve states currently do not tax business personal property. These states include Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and South Dakota.

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming are the only states that do not levy a state income tax. Note that Washington does levy a state capital gains tax on certain high earners.
