Nielsen sends mail to homes with invitations to complete short surveys on your media and consumer habits or to join our panels. Mail from Nielsen may include a survey that can be completed online, filled out and returned via mail, or done over the phone.

Is the Nielsen Consumer Survey Legitimate? Nielsen Consumer Surveys are legitimate.

To find their sample, Nielsen selects a county, then specific towns within that county, then specific homes within the designated area. They reach out and ask each of the chosen homes to participate in the program.

Will Nielsen try to sell me anything, or sell my name and address to marketers? Absolutely not. The information from your home is held strictly confidential—we will not use it to advertise, promote or sell goods and services directly to you, and we do not allow our clients to sell directly to you.

Why did you contact me? Households were randomly selected to be the “voice” for others in your local area. By participating in our research, you have the opportunity to tell local businesses about your choices and preferences in consumer products and services so that they can serve you better.

Our highly trained Nielsen representatives want the chance to tell you about the exciting opportunity to participate in the Nielsen ratings. All of our representatives carry a Nielsen photo ID badge to identify them. If you are unsure about the person at your door, call us at 1-800-237-6493.

If you ever get junk mail from Nielsen - the company that does the TV ratings, don't throw it away. Nielsen Families are people who allow us to measure what they watch on TV and listen to on the radio. We take what we learn from them and produce the ratings. I got a mailer from a company identifying itself as Nielsen Surveys or something like that. It had a dollar bill and a business return envelope. The Nielsen Consumer Survey asks about the activities you like, your shopping, travel and entertainment preferences, and your media choices. They've been sending me a few bucks in cash with the promise of more for completing and sending back surveys. A few years ago I had the chance to be a Nielsen "family" (though I live alone) and catalog, for all posterity, a detailed record of my TV viewing habits. There are a few pros to being a Neilsen family, but it's mostly just annoying. Pros: Each member in the household gets a monthly check.
