The Allegheny National Forest is the only National Forest in Pennsylvania. The Allegheny Reservoir is 27 miles long with 90 miles of shoreline, and is the centerpiece of developed recreation on the Allegheny National Forest.
The Allegheny National Forest (ANF) is Pennsylvania's only National Forest, which spans across Forest, Elk, McKean and Warren counties. The ANF is among the most beautiful areas of Pennsylvania and has a rich and spirited history. During the 19th Century, a great deal of deforestation took place in the ANF.
In 1923 the land that is now the Allegheny National Forest was purchased by the Federal Government, but the federal government did not buy the subsurface or mineral rights of the land because of financial issues. Private citizens currently own ninety-three percent of the subsurface land in the forest.
The Allegheny Reservoir is famous for water recreation and water-side camping. Water activities range from swimming, to boating and water-skiing, canoeing and kayaking, and of course, fishing.
