FAQ

Although the tax withholding system aims to produce the most accurate withholding, you can add an extra amount on Line 4(c) for "extra withholding" to increase your income tax withholding and reduce your paycheck. That will either increase your tax refund or decrease any tax you owe when you file your tax return.

If you are eligible to claim an exemption from withholding, you can use the W-4 form. You are only exempt from withholding if you owed no federal tax the prior year and you expect to owe no federal tax for the current year. To claim you are exempt, you write “Exempt” on the new W-4 form in the space below Step 4(c).

Use the Tax Withholding Estimator on IRS. The Tax Withholding Estimator works for most employees by helping them determine whether they need to give their employer a new Form W-4. They can use their results from the estimator to help fill out the form and adjust their income tax withholding.

Note: The W-4 form 2024 steps are the same as the W-4 form 2025 steps. Step 1: Enter your personal information. Step 2: Account for all jobs you and your spouse have. Step 3: Claim your children and other dependents. Step 4: Make other adjustments. Step 5: Sign and date your form.

How to claim exempt status on a W-4. To claim an exemption, you must complete only lines 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 and sign the form to validate it. (In Box 7, write “EXEMPT”. Writing this will guarantee that withholdings are not taken from your future paychecks.)

To claim exempt, write EXEMPT under line 4c. You may claim EXEMPT from withholding if: o Last year you had a right to a full refund of All federal tax income and o This year you expect a full refund of ALL federal income tax. NOTE: if you claim EXEMPT you must complete a new W-4 annually in February.

When taxes are being withheld and not yet remitted to the state, the amounts withheld shall form part of the current liabilities of the company. Thus, it is presented as withholding tax payable in the balance sheet, under the current liabilities category.

To reiterate, the EoPT Law provides that the timing of withholding of tax is when the income becomes payable. There is no qualification that the withholding tax falls due when it is payable or accrued, whichever comes first.

Events such as divorce, marriage, new dependents, or side gigs can trigger a change in tax liability. If you got a big tax bill when you filed your tax return this year and don't want another, you can use Form W-4 to increase your withholding. That'll help you owe less (or nothing) next time you file.

Credit for backup withholding If your Form 1099 shows an amount withheld under the backup withholding rules, report the amount as federal income tax withheld on your income tax return for the year you received the income.
