(Date) Dear (Donor): I have received your "Offer of Gift," dated ___________________, by which you, on behalf of the (Name of Company), offered to convey (Description of Property) to the United States of America as a gift. I accept with pleasure your gift and conveyance of the (Property), pursuant to 10 U.S.C. 2601.

How Do I Write a Gift Letter? The donor's name, address and phone number. The donor's relationship to the client. The dollar amount of the gift. The date when the funds were (or will be) transferred. A statement from the donor that no repayment is expected. The donor's signature.

At minimum, a gift letter should include: The giver's name and relationship to the borrower. The dollar amount of the gifted funds. The source of the gifted funds, such as an account number and statements.

Each spouse is entitled to the annual exclusion amount on the gift, as shown in the table. However, gift splitting can only be used if both spouses are U.S. citizens or residents; if not, a gift tax return will need to be filed by each spouse.

Unless you made a taxable gift valued at more than $18,000 to an individual or entity in 2024 or more than $19,000 in 2025, you don't need to fill out Form 709. If you did, you may just need to report the gift. You won't owe an out-of-pocket tax until you've given more than your lifetime gift and estate tax exemption.

Gifts to a spouse are not reported on a tax return, regardless of the amount gifted. Generally gifts to a spouse are not subject to the requirement to file a Form 709. What you have described is not an exception so there would be no reporting of the gift on a form 709.
