Southwest Airlines has a specific system that assigns boarding groups and positions to passengers based on when they check in for their flight. The passengers then line up in order and board the plane ing to their assigned group and position. The passengers can choose any available seat once they are on board.
Love it or hate it, Southwest utilizes an open seating policy. An open seating policy means that you do not have an assigned seat. Instead, you choose your seat when you get on the plane. With a few exceptions (like no exit rows for children), passengers are allowed to choose any seat that is available when they board.
