For normal retirement and to receive your full monthly benefit, you must be age 65 with at least 8 years of service or have 33 years of service regardless of age.

You will be eligible for a Pension Plan benefit (i.e. be vested) when you complete six years of service (if you were enrolled in the FRS prior to July 1, 2011) or eight years of service (if you were enrolled in the FRS on or after July 1, 2011).

If initially enrolled in the FRS on or after July 1, 2011, you qualify for normal retirement when one of the following applies: You are vested and age 65 or the age after age 65 when you become vested; or • You have 33 years of creditable service before age 65. You have 30 years of any creditable service before age 62.

The most basic rule of thumb is the income rule, which states that your insurance need would be equal to six or eight times your gross annual income. For example, a person earning a gross annual income of $60,000 should have between $360,000 (6 x $60,000) and $480,000 (8 x $60,000) in life insurance coverage.

FRS Pension and Investment Plan Vesting Periods: There are two plans County employees can enroll in: the Pension plan and the Investment plan. Depending on your FRS employment date, your vesting period may be different. Please see below.

Officially, you'll start the retirement process with your employer, letting them know when you plan to stop working. Depending on your employer and your tenure, you may need to write an official letter of resignation, document your contacts, processes, and files, and maybe even train a replacement.

The retirement benefits application process follows these general steps, whether you apply online, by phone, or in person: Gather the information and documents you need to apply. Complete and submit your application. We review your application and contact you if we need more information. We mail you a decision letter.

Option 1 provides a monthly benefit for your lifetime, but does not provide a continuing benefit to a beneficiary. Option 2 provides a reduced monthly benefit for your lifetime, with a guarantee that your beneficiary will be eligible for a continuing benefit for 10 years from the date you retire.
