FAQ

A Clerk, or Bookkeeper, is responsible for performing administrative tasks to support daily business operations. Their duties include responding to phone calls or emails, maintaining an organized filing system and restocking office supplies as needed.

Most often, the secretary is expected to keep records of congregational meetings, baptisms, confirmations, membership, and maybe marriages and funerals as well. The clerk may also be the person who calls official meetings, establishes quorums at meetings, knows the bylaws and sees that things are done legally.

Secretaries and Office Clerks serve similar roles, but Secretaries tend to have more front-facing responsibilities while Office Clerks work behind the scenes. Secretaries provide reception services for an entire office, department or specific person while Office Clerks may not interact with the public at all.

The church secretary or clerk records the activities of the church for the official record, telling who, what, when, where and, if possible, why. He or she then sees that these records are stored for future reference.

Responsibilities of the Church Clerk Prepare Church Board and Business Meeting minutes. Maintain Membership Records. Help prevent Missing members. Keep a list of Committees. Develop Church Directory. Prepare Church Bulletin. Union Paper subscriptions. Obituaries.

The single, overarching qualification of which the rest are supportive is that he is to be “above reproach.” That is, he must be a leader who cannot be accused of anything sinful because he has a sustained reputation for blamelessness.

In some Christian traditions (e.g., Eastern Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Anglicanism, Methodism) an elder is an ordained person who serves a local church or churches and who has been ordained to a ministry of word, sacrament and order, filling the preaching and pastoral offices.

Being an Elder is not defined by age, but rather Elders are recognized because they have earned the respect of their community through wisdom, harmony and balance of their actions in their teachings.

1), elders should be appointed by the express consent of the congregation. How to balance these two principles is a matter of prudence. One way to recognize both biblical principles is (i) to have the elders nominate prospective elders and then (ii) to have the congregation vote to recognize them.

The appointment is the congregation's recognition or affirmation that a prospective elder possesses the biblical qualifications found in 1 Tim. –7 and Titus –9. It is the acknowledgment, “This man is biblically qualified and evidently a gift of Christ to our church” (Eph. ).
