You must have worked a minimum of three years in public service (five years if first eligible for PERA after June 30, 2010). If you terminated your public service at any time, a minimum of two of the years required for vesting must have been earned since last becoming a member.

Hennepin County, Minnesota Pension Plan Employees are required by MN State law to become members of a statewide pension system, the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA), a defined benefit pension plan. The county and employees share PERA contributions, which vary by plan.

Most PERA members do not contribute to Social Security while they are working for PERA employers. If you are eligible for both a PERA benefit and a Social Security benefit, your PERA benefit will never be reduced due to any Social Security benefit you may receive.
