Around 83% of employees spend up to 1/3 of their workweek in meetings. CEOs spend 72% of work time in meetings. Upper management spends 50% in meetings. Middle management employees spend roughly 35% of their time in meetings.

More frequent meetings—daily and/or weekly—are for sharing information, reviewing performance, and solving problems. Quarterly meetings serve to adjust strategies as needed, and the annual meeting is for setting the organization's overall strategy. The ideal scheme may vary from one organization to another.

We surveyed 182 senior managers in a range of industries: 65% said meetings keep them from completing their own work. 71% said meetings are unproductive and inefficient. 64% said meetings come at the expense of deep thinking. 62% said meetings miss opportunities to bring the team closer together.

An estimated $37 billion is lost due to unproductive meetings per year. Only 30% of meetings are considered productive and 37% of workplace meetings actively use an agenda. 71% of professionals lose time every week due to canceled or unnecessary meetings.

A 2023 survey from Slack found that, for most people, two hours per day of meetings is the most they can stand. That would translate to 10 hours per week or 25% of the workweek.

How to Persuade Employees to Attend a Meeting Send a meeting outline/agenda to every employee by email in advance of the meeting. Clearly state that the meeting is mandatory. State on the agenda that refreshments will be served. Inject a little fun into the meeting to make it more interesting.
