512.1. (a) An employee directly employed by an employer shall be entitled to one unpaid 30-minute meal period on shifts over 5 hours and a second unpaid 30-minute meal period on shifts over 10 hours, as provided by Section 512.

Labor Code section 512(a) specifies that “An employer may not employ an employee for a work period of more than five hours per day without providing the employee with a meal period of not less than 30 minutes…” (Emphasis added).

Typically, if an individual is working in California, they are subject to California labor laws, irrespective of where they live, including both part-time and full-time, in-state and out-of-state workers.
