Minimum Age Standards For Employment 16 - Basic minimum age for employment. Sixteen- and 17-year-olds may be employed for unlimited hours in any occupation other than those declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor.

In most places, the minimum legal age to work in a commercial kitchen is 18 years old. This is due to the fact that working in a kitchen can be physically demanding and may involve the use of sharp knives, hot ovens and other equipment that can be dangerous.

10-12 year olds and up This age group can usually work independently in the kitchen. Before letting them do grown-up tasks on their own, they should have close adult supervision to assess whether they can follow basic rules such as tucking pan handles, unplugging electrical appliances, and safely using a chef's knife.

Ages 16 & 17 Older teens are allowed to work for up to 48 hours over the course of the week. 16 and 17-year-olds are allowed to work between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. most days and as late as a.m. on nights before nonschool days.

Courses. Other options include college courses which are available from the age of 16; these courses allow you to start at a younger age. There are multiple courses that you can choose from, including: Level 3 Diploma in Professional Cookery.

“When can I teach my kids how to cook?” Anytime! It can be fun and rewarding to get kids of any age involved in the kitchen! Cooking together is a fantastic way to spend quality time with your children while developing their kitchen skills and setting them up to become future food-lovers.

Fourteen- and 15- year-olds may be employed in food preparation, but they may not perform any baking activities and only limited cooking tasks. There are also restrictions on the number of hours and times of day that these minors may be employed.

16 and 17-year-old minors enrolled in school may not work for more than nine hours in any one day, 40 hours in a school week, 48 hours in a non-school week, and six days in any one week.

A minor who goes to school from 8am to 3pm (7 hours) may work for 1 hour between the time they get out of school and 7pm. A minor who gets out of school early and attends school from 8am-1pm (5 hours) may work 3 hours between the time they get out of school and 7pm.
