General. Full-time employment is considered 40 hours weekly and is generally eight hours per day. Seven days a week including Sunday, are now considered working days in Jamaica, with work shifts up to 12 hours in 24 hours.

In Jamaica, the Employment (Termination and Redundancy Payments) Act (ETRPA) governs the legal requirements for notice periods during employment termination.

I. At the expiration of a contract period, there must be a break of at least two (2) weeks before the contract is renewed. ii. A contract period is not to be extended in lieu of any form of leave or break in service during the contract period.

"The standard work week shall be 40 hours per week presently consisting of five days - Monday to Friday. The normal hours of work are: Mondays to Thursdays 8.00 a.m. - 4.30 p.m. Fridays 8.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. with one hour break for lunch.

Maryland is an employment-at-will state, which means that without a written employee contract, employees can be terminated for any reason at any time, provided that the reason is not discriminatory and that the employer is not retaliating against the employee for a rightful action.

Maryland is an at-will employment jurisdiction; therefore, in the absence of an express contract, agreement, or policy to the contrary, either the employer or the employee may terminate the employment relationship with or without cause, and with or without notice.

In Maryland, you may be disqualified from unemployment if you: Voluntarily resign without cause. Are terminated due to misconduct. Refuse to accept suitable work.
