Work permits are required for all minors under the age of 18 to work in the State of Maryland. A minor under the age of 14 is not permitted to work and may not be employed.Minors 14 through 17 years of age may only work with a work permit. Minors 16 and 17 years of age: May spend no more than 12 hours in a combination of school hours and work hours each day. 16 and 17: May work the same hours as those who are 18 years old. If the employer has a restaurant designation and is licensed to sell alcohol, minors 17 years of age must also have an approved work permit. Maryland has child labor laws requiring special permits and restricting the hours worked but the laws do not require adult supervision in retail establishments. If you are 18 years old, you may work at any time in any job. Once an employee is 18 years old, child labor rules no longer apply.
