Employment of Minors (Work Permit) - Employment Standards Service (ESS) Work permits are required for all minors under the age of 18 to work in the State of Maryland. Work permits are not issued to minors under the age of 14. Work permits are issued by the Division of Labor and Industry.

Non-school hours; 18 hours in a school week; 40 hours in any week when school is not in session; May only work between the hours of am and pm. May work until pm from June 1 until Labor Day.

Applications for work permits are accepted online at: .dllr.state.md/childworkpermit. Steps: Minor or Parent/Guardian completes required information online and prints work permit. TO BE VALID: The Minor, the Minor's Parent/ Guardian, and the Employer must sign the permit.

16 and 17-year-olds You'll only be able to work for eight hours every day, or a total of 40 hours over the course of a week. You can't usually work an overnight shift, but there are some exceptional circumstances where you can.
16-17 year olds may now work a maximum of 28 hours per week during school and only between the hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. when school is open for instruction. In order to work past 10 p.m. on nights before a school day, both school and parental consent will be required.
