The vast majority of employment relationships in Maryland and D.C. are what the law refers to as “at-will.” This generally means that an employer may terminate an employee for any reason or no reason, while an employee may leave his or her job for any reason or no reason.

Maryland's Wage Transparency Law requires all employers — both public and private — to disclose in both internal and external job postings, including those posted through third parties: Wage ranges (including the minimum and maximum wage); A general description of benefits; and. Any additional compensation.

An applicant or employee may file a written complaint with the appropriate head of the principal unit within 1 year after the complainant knew, or reasonably should have known, of the alleged violation of the State's Fair Employment Practices Policy (SPP 5-211).

The Maryland General Assembly passed new laws requiring employers to disclose certain wage information when posting job openings. Under Maryland's "lien for unpaid wages" law, an employee may place a lien on an employer's property to secure the payment of unpaid wages. Effective October 1, 2024, employers must disclose in public or internal job postings a good faith wage range and a general description of benefits. The Maryland legislature recently passed several laws that affect pay transparency, family and medical leave, the scope of the State's antidiscrimination laws. Thus, sexual orientation is not protected under this law. It goes without saying that Maryland employers must pay employees for all time worked. The Equal Pay for Equal Work law in the state prohibits employers from compensating people differently based on their sex or gender identity.
