Minimum Age Standards For Employment 16 - Basic minimum age for employment. Sixteen- and 17-year-olds may be employed for unlimited hours in any occupation other than those declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor.

Youths under 18 years of age must obtain a youth employment certificate (work permit) when employed even if employed by their parents. The certificate and the issuing instructions can be obtained from the North Carolina Department of Labor Website.

When school is not in session, minors under the age of 16 can work up to 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week. Minors aged 16 or 17 can work up to 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week.

If a worker is 16 or 17, the requirements are less restrictive but they take into account school hours. A minor of these ages cannot exceed 12 hours of work and school in one day; and in every 24-hour period, a child must be allowed eight consecutive hours when he or she is not working or in school.

There is no days per week restriction. 16 and 17-year-old minors enrolled in school may not work for more than nine hours in any one day, 40 hours in a school week, 48 hours in a non-school week, and six days in any one week.

Job Limitations Youths 14-15 years of age: Work may be performed in retail businesses, food service establishments, service stations and offices of other businesses.

Work Hours – All Minors You may not work more than 5 consecutive hours without a nonworking period of at least 30 minutes. Unless the Commissioner has granted an exception, your total school and work hours may not exceed 12 hours. You must have at least 8 consecutive hours that are not school or work hours.

There is no limit to the number of hours an adult employee can work under Maryland or federal law. As long as there is no employment contract or company policy in place that states otherwise, an employer can set an employee's minimum and maximum hours and change them at any time at her or his sole discretion.

A minor who gets out of school early and attends school from 8am-1pm (5 hours) may work 3 hours between the time they get out of school and 7pm. No matter the number of hours spent in school on any given day, the maximum number of hours a minor may work on any school day is 3 hours.

As a general rule, the FLSA sets 14 years old as the minimum age for employment, and limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16.
