Short rest breaks, usually lasting about 5 to 20 minutes, are considered compensable work hours and must be paid. The law doesn't require employers to offer rest breaks.However, those who choose to do so must compensate the workers for the rest time. Although breaks are not required, employers must pay employees for time they spend working and for shorter breaks during the day. There are no requirements for breaks, meal or rest periods for employees 18 years of age or older. Minor employees are owed 30minute breaks after every five hours of consecutive work; this break time can be unpaid. Michigan labor laws require employers to provide meal breaks to employees who work more than five hours per day, but do not require them to provide rest breaks. Michigan does not require employers to provide breaks, including lunch breaks, for workers 18 years old or older. Workers have a right to at least a 30minute meal break or each 6 hours worked in a calendar day. Michigan law requires that minors be given a 30-minute break if they work more than five continuous hours.
