The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) administers and enforces more than 180 federal laws. These mandates and the regulations that implement them cover many workplace activities for about 165 million workers and 11 million workplaces.

Cal/OSHA has jurisdiction over almost every workplace in California. This means Cal/OSHA is the main government agency authorized to inspect California workplaces for occupational safety and health violations. Cal/OSHA lacks jurisdiction in only a few limited areas.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) administers and enforces most federal employment laws, including those covering wages and hours of work, safety and health standards, employee health and retirement benefits, and federal contracts. Several other federal agencies also administer laws affecting employment issues.

You and your coworkers have the right to meet and discuss workplace issues, including whether or not to be represented by a union. Employers cannot threaten, discriminate against, or otherwise take action against you for organizing or talking with your coworkers about working conditions.

So EEO generally refers to your company's own internal procedures for investigating unfair treatment. This is distinct from the EEOC, which if a federal agency which investigates violations of the federal laws pertaining to discrimination on the basis of legally protected traits, such as race or religion.

If there is an employment dispute, federal law may supersede state law, as every state is legally obligated to follow federal law. However, the FLSA only provides a minimum threshold for employee rights. Most states, including California, have expanded on the minimum requirements.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces EEO laws and also provides oversight and coordination of all Federal EEO regulations, practices, and policies. EEOC is an independent Federal agency originally created by Congress in 1964 to enforce Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Maryland is an employment-at-will state, which means that without a written employee contract, employees can be terminated for any reason at any time, provided that the reason is not discriminatory and that the employer is not retaliating against the employee for a rightful action.

There are a number of federal and state laws that prohibit discrimination because of age, race, color, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, and pregnancy. Several Maryland laws prohibit retaliation against an employee who has disclosed wrongdoing by an employer.
