To begin the process of seeking a minor work permit, the parent/guardian should contact the school district or Regional Office of Education in their area to inquire if it can be obtained locally. If not, request can be made by contacting the Illinois State Board of Education.

You may not work in processing, mining, in any workroom or workplace where goods are manufactured or processed, in freezers, or in meat coolers. You may not operate or tend any power-driven machinery, except office machines. You may not perform any baking operations.

“Letter of intent to hire” must be obtained from all prospective employers. The letter must outline hours worked. Teen and parent or guardian must bring this letter to an issuing officer at minor's school or school district to obtain the required work permit.

The rules vary depending upon the particular age of the minor and the particular job involved. As a general rule, the FLSA sets 14 years old as the minimum age for employment, and limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16.
