The Low-Income Senior Freeze provides limited-income seniors with protection against real estate tax increases due to rising property values. It is not a tax freeze or a tax reduction and does not protect against increased taxes due to tax rate increases.

Retirees and other older homeowners on fixed incomes may reduce their tax bill by taking advantage of "Senior Freeze." To qualify for the “Senior Freeze” exemption, the applicant must: Be at over 65 years old. Have a total annual household income of $65,000 or less.

All legal Florida residents are eligible for a Homestead Exemption on their homes, condominiums, co-op apartments, and certain mobile home lots if they qualify. The Florida Constitution provides this tax-saving exemption on the first and third $25,000 of the assessed value of an owner/occupied residence.

A Senior Exemption is calculated by multiplying the Senior Exemption savings amount ($8,000) by your local tax rate. Your local tax rate is determined by the Cook County Clerk and can be found on your second-installment tax bill or by contacting the Cook County Clerk's Office at 312-603-6566.
