§11-6B-7. -- The exemption of the first $20,000 $40,000 of assessed value shall be shown on the property books as a deduction from the total assessed value of the homestead.

You must have lived at your homestead for at least six (6) months. You must have been a resident of West Virginia for the 2 consecutive calendar years prior to your application. You must be 65 years of age on or before June 30th of the next year.

An Exemption from real estate taxes shall be allowed for the first $20,000 of assessed value. All new applicants must file between July 1st and December 1st of each year. Application may be made at your County Assessors Office.

Property owners must be at least 65 years old, on or before, June 30 of the next calendar year.

Homestead tax exemptions usually offer a fixed discount on taxes, such as exempting the first $50,000 of the assessed value with the remainder taxed at the normal rate. With a $50,000 homestead exemption, a home valued at $150,000 would be taxed on only $100,000 of assessed value.

Below is a representative, nonexclusive list of property that may be exempt from property tax: The first $20,000 of assessed value of owner-occupied residential property owned by a person age 65 or older or by a person who is permanently and totally disabled is exempt.

Effective July 1, 2024, all business and inventory ad valorem property tax on tangible personal property is repealed.
