Missouri Homestead Laws at a Glance The statute makes it clear that the total exemption amount of $15,000 may not be exceeded under any circumstances.

General Homestead Exemption (GHE) (35 ILCS 200/15-175) The amount of exemption is the increase in the current year's equalized assessed value (EAV), above the 1977 EAV, up to a maximum of $10,000 in Cook County, $8,000 in counties contiguous to Cook County, and $6,000 in all other counties.

During the 2004 legislative session, the General Assembly enacted SB 730, sponsored by Senator Chuck Gross, which created the Missouri Homestead Preservation Act.

During its 2023 session, the Minnesota State legislature authorized a modification was authorized to increase the homestead market value exclusion for homesteads to $517,200. The purpose of this revision was to keep pace with increases in home values since 2012.

Missouri Homestead Laws at a Glance Missouri homestead law allows for a $15,000 exemption, which is applicable to "a dwelling house and appurtenances, and the land used in connection therewith." In other words, the state's homestead law is limited to homes, corresponding buildings, and the land on which they stand.

North Carolina excludes from property taxes a portion of the appraised value of a permanent residence owned and occupied by North Carolina residents aged 65 or older or totally and permanently disabled whose 2024 income does not exceed $37,900 annually.

A few states, notably including Florida and Texas, offer an unlimited homestead exemption, allowing a homeowner to protect 100% of the value of a primary residence.

Most states have homestead exemptions except New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Some states have other homestead laws such as provisions that protect surviving spouses from creditors.

Declared Homestead. Currently, the California homestead exemption is automatic, meaning that a homestead declaration does not need to be filed with the county clerk. Under the new 2021 law, $300,000–$600,000 of a home's equity cannot be touched by judgment creditors.
